Make It Your Own

For the aurora look shown, cut the plates from 16 fat quarters: 5 lavender or lilac, 4 teal, 3 ice blue, 2 aurora prints (green with violet) and 2 mint. Snowflake, frost and sparkle prints catch the light against the navy background, and every plate uses one blade of each fabric, starting at a different blade so no two plates look alike.

Finish the plates with pale mint centers, then frame them with light aqua and teal sashing, teal-and-lavender Nine Patch cornerstones and a navy binding. It is a lovely way to use a cool-toned fat-quarter bundle or the blues and purples already in your stash.

Appliqué each plate and center by hand for a slow, heirloom finish, or by machine with a blanket or zigzag stitch. Both methods are explained. Background squares are cut at 13″ and trimmed to 12½″ after appliqué, so every block comes out perfectly square.

Before You Begin

Finished size: 63″ × 63″ throw. 16 Dresden Plate blocks, 12″ finished, set 4 × 4 with 3″ finished sashing and 25 Nine Patch cornerstones. Each plate has 16 pointed blades (256 blades in all) and a turned 3″ center.

Materials (42″ width of fabric): 16 fat quarters (5 lavender, 4 teal, 3 ice blue, 2 aurora, 2 mint) · Navy: 2¾ yards (backgrounds and binding) · Light aqua: 1¼ yards · Teal: 1 yard · Lavender: ¼ yard · Pale mint: ¼ yard (centers) · Fusible interfacing: ⅜ yard (20″ wide) · Backing: 4 yards · Batting: 67″ × 67″.

Techniques used: Sewing Dresden blades with pointed tips, joining 16 blades into a plate, turned circle centers, hand or machine appliqué (blanket or zigzag stitch), trimming blocks to size, sashing strip sets, Nine Patch cornerstones, quilting and binding.
