The Timeless Linen Angel

Machine or hand sewing

A sewing machine is recommended for the three short seams (robe, wings and strap). You can sew them by hand with a backstitch instead; the pattern explains how, step by step.

Some hand stitching is always needed: closing the turning gaps, securing the folds, and attaching the loop and wings.

Time: about 1 hour, plus glue drying time (longer if you sew the seams by hand).

Materials for one angel

• Fabric A, light natural linen: 8″ × 12″ (20 × 30 cm) for the robe front and loop strip.
• Fabric B, ivory linen: 6″ × 6″ (15 × 15 cm) for the robe lining, which shows on the folded sleeve panels.
• Fabric C, oatmeal linen: 8″ × 8″ (20 × 20 cm) for the wings (4 squares).
• Lightweight fusible interfacing: 8″ × 8″ (20 × 20 cm).
• Wooden bead: one 25 mm (1″) large-hole macrame bead with a 10 mm (⅜″) hole. Or any 25 mm bead with a hole of 4 mm or more plus about 10″ (25 cm) of thin twisted cotton cord.
• Wooden heart: one flat-backed heart, 3 to 3.5 cm (1³⁄₁₆″ to 1⅜″).
• Matching sewing thread, and PVA craft glue or fabric glue.

Fabric choice: light- to medium-weight cotton or linen that holds a pressed crease, such as linen, a linen/cotton blend or quilting cotton. Avoid very soft, slippery, stretchy or thick fabrics.

Tools: printer, paper and fabric scissors, ruler, fabric marker, pins or clips, hand needle, sewing machine (or hand sewing), iron, and a point turner or chopstick.

Printing your pattern

The pattern is a US Letter PDF (8½″ × 11″) that also prints correctly on A4. Print the template pages at 100% / Actual Size, with "Fit to Page" turned off.

Before cutting, measure the scale check on the template page: the 1″ square should measure exactly 1 inch and the 5 cm square exactly 5 cm.
