🧵 Simple Shapes, Thoughtful Stitching

Squares, rectangles and straight seams create the block. The center is strip-pieced; there are no curved seams, triangles or appliqué shapes in the block construction.

A cheerful way to practise patchwork fundamentals. Accurate cutting, a scant ¼-inch seam and careful pressing matter. Beginners familiar with their sewing machine may prefer the larger size, as the smaller block uses finer pieces.

  • Large: 9½ × 9½ inches unfinished; 9 × 9 inches finished when joined.
  • Small: 5 × 5 inches unfinished; 4½ × 4½ inches finished when joined.

The instructions end with the pieced block. A quilt, cushion, table runner or other larger project requires a separate layout and finishing plan. Backing, batting, quilting and binding instructions are not included.

Choose contrasting quilting cottons, coordinating thread, a sewing machine, an iron and accurate fabric-cutting tools. Use your favorite seasonal prints and follow the cutting tables to prepare your pieces. The PDF uses measurement-based cutting; its diagrams are assembly guides, not full-size cutting templates.
