Thoughtful Stitching, Beautiful Points

This design uses foundation paper piecing (FPP): fabric is sewn in sequence onto numbered paper foundations, then trimmed and joined into the finished block. The paper guides the seam placement and helps build the design's precise angles.

Best suited to quilters comfortable with their sewing machine, accurate trimming and pressing. If you are new to FPP, take time to learn the method before starting and work through the numbered sections carefully. This is not a basic squares-only patchwork project or a complete beginner course.

Block Size & Printing

  • Each quarter foundation: 6½ × 6½ inches along the outer trimming line.
  • Assembled block: approximately 12½ × 12½ inches unfinished; approximately 12 × 12 inches finished when joined with ¼-inch seams.
  • Print at actual size / 100%: do not use “Fit to Page.” Check both the 1-inch test square and the 6½-inch template measurement before cutting.

The PDF is formatted on A4 pages. The size above follows from joining the four 6½-inch quarter blocks with ¼-inch seams. The instructions end with the pieced block; a quilt, cushion or table runner needs a separate layout and finishing plan. Backing, batting, quilting and binding instructions are not included.

Make It Your Christmas

Choose three contrasting quilting cottons and bring your own festive palette to the design. The example uses evergreen, red and ivory fabrics with gold details; the PDF's original fabric references use black/charcoal, white and turquoise. Keep the light, dark and accent placements consistent when substituting fabrics.
