A plump, patchwork turkey fans nine quilted tail feathers around an insulated body, ready to grab a casserole dish or simply hang on the oven handle all season.

Each feather is sewn, turned and quilted on its own, then caught into the body seam, so every edge is clean and no binding is needed. A great way to use up autumn scraps, and a thoughtful hostess gift.

The insulated body measures 7⅛″ × 7⅞″.

Skill level & sewing machine

Confident Beginner. You will sew gentle curves and simple fusible raw-edge appliqué. The body is sewn and turned, so there is no binding to attach.

A sewing machine with a straight stitch and a zigzag, blanket or satin stitch is required. A walking foot is recommended for the thick body seam and the quilting. The eyes are embroidered by hand with black floss.

Beginner shortcut from the pattern: use the narrow zigzag instead of satin stitch, and French-knot eyes instead of satin-stitch eyes.

Materials for one potholder

• Fabric A, brown print: 1 fat quarter for the body front, back and hanging loop.
• Feather fabrics: red, cream and orange fat eighths (D, F, H), plus gold, green plaid and sage scraps (C, E, G).
• Appliqué: tan scrap for the wings (B), gold for the beak and red for the wattle.
• Batting: thin 100% cotton batting (20″ × 17″) and heat-resistant insulated batting (9″ × 9″).
• Paper-backed fusible web, tear-away stabilizer, black 6-strand embroidery floss, and piecing, quilting and appliqué threads.

Fabric choice: 100% cotton fabrics only, because synthetic fabrics can melt near heat. No separate backing or binding fabric is needed.

Tools: sewing machine (straight stitch plus zigzag, blanket or satin stitch), walking foot, open-toe appliqué foot, rotary cutter, ruler and mat, small sharp scissors, point turner, iron and pressing cloth, removable fabric marker, lightbox or sunny window, pins or clips, hand-sewing and embroidery needles, printer and paper.

Printing your pattern

The pattern is a US Letter PDF. Print the template pages at 100% / Actual Size on US Letter or A4 paper, with "Fit to Page" turned off.

Before tracing, measure the 1″ test square on each template page. It must measure exactly 1 inch.

Hang it on the oven handle all season by its built-in loop, use it to lift a casserole dish, wrap one as a hostess gift, or sew a pair from your autumn scraps.

Heat safety: the insulated batting slows heat transfer, but no potholder is heat-proof. Grip hot dishes by the body, since the feathers are decorative and contain only thin cotton batting. Keep away from open flames and burners, and do not use when wet.
