A cheerful folded-fabric snowman: 2 x 3″ rectangles are folded into crisp triangles and pinned in seven layers on a marked soft foam egg, then topped with a fabric-covered head, a gathered no-sew hat, a fringed scarf, wire arms and sparkly sequin details.

What you'll make

One folded fabric snowman ornament

Built on a large soft foam egg (approx. 4″ tall, marked into 8 sections) with a 2″ foam ball head.
Dressed in a red plaid hat, hat band and fringed scarf, with optional wire arms, sequins and a hanger.

Colorway note: Shown in a variety of fabric colorways. In the pattern, the hat and scarf are made from fabric strips (the sample uses red plaid), so you can match any color you love.

How it works

Fold. Fold the top edge of a 2 x 3″ rectangle, pin it to the egg, then fold both sides down into the Basic Triangle Fold.

Pin. Line up the center of each triangle with a dividing line on the foam egg and pin the corners flat for crisp, straight rows.

Layer. Build seven layers of triangles, placed in sets of four, measured down from the layer before, until the body is covered. Then add the head, hat, scarf and details.

Materials checklist

• Foam: 1 large soft foam egg (approx. 4″ tall, with 8 dividing lines) and 1 foam ball (2″).
• Fabric #1, white: 53 rectangles (2 x 3″): 52 for the body and 1 for the face.
• Fabric #2, red plaid: 1 large rectangle (approx. 5 x 7″) for the hat, 1 strip (approx. 1-3/4 x 7-1/2″) for the hat band, and 1 longer strip (approx. 1-3/4 x 10-1/2″) for the scarf.
• Pins: about 325 straight pins, two 3″ long pins (for the head and the pom pom), and black pins for the eyes and mouth (optional).
• String (approx. 11″) for gathering the hat, and a pom pom (approx. 3/4″) for the top of the hat.
• Optional: brown floral wire and long looped pins for the arms, sequins and beads (an orange teardrop bead for the nose), and string or ribbon (approx. 12″) to hang the ornament.

Other tools: flexible measuring tape and scissors. Optional: clear-drying craft glue that is safe to use on foam, and a fray-preventing product.

Bonus: folded penguin variation

Use the same foam shapes and the same folding, pinning and spacing steps to make a penguin. The cheat sheet lists every cut: 41 black and 11 white rectangles (2 x 3″) for the body, 3 black and 1 white for the face, plus a fleece hat (approx. 4 x 7″) and fleece scarf (approx. 1 x 10-1/2″).

A placement chart shows how many black and white pieces go in each set of Layers #1 to #7.
