Frosted Star Garden
Quilt Pattern PDF

16 Scrappy Stars. Straight Seams. A Frosty Winter Throw.

Sixteen scrappy stars glow like frost on a midnight-blue window. Frosted Star Garden is a 67½″ × 67½″ throw quilt with sixteen 14″ star blocks, each made of 12 blades and a center square in light prints of ice blue, white, silver gray and pale blue, all set on a deep navy background. The blocks are set 4 × 4 with navy sashing and framed with a navy inner border and a pale ice-blue outer border. Every piece is a rotary-cut square or rectangle joined with stitch-and-flip corners and straight seams, so there are no templates, no Y-seams and no paper piecing. Wintry rather than strictly Christmas, it stays out on the sofa as frosty winter décor from November through February.

Digital PDF quilt pattern only. You are purchasing a downloadable sewing guide, delivered as an instant digital download. A finished quilt, fabric, batting, backing and styling props are not included. No physical item will be shipped.

Make It Your Own

For the frosty look shown, cut the star blades and centers from assorted light prints in ice blue, white, silver gray and pale blue, and set them on a deep navy background with navy sashing and a navy inner border. A pale ice-blue outer border adds a thin line of frost around the edge.

The stars are made for your stash: the pattern calls for 2¼ yards of light prints in total, and any mix of lights works. The stronger the contrast between your lights and the dark background, the more every star will sparkle.

The product images show a fabric-colorway and styling idea. Fabrics are not supplied; choose your own prints and yardage to create your version.

Before You Begin

Finished size: 67½″ × 67½″ throw / lap quilt (quilt top 68″ × 68″ before binding). Sixteen star blocks, 14″ finished (14½″ unfinished), set 4 across and 4 down with 2″ finished navy sashing, a 2″ navy inner border and a ¾″ pale ice-blue outer border.

Fabric requirements (42″ width of fabric): Fabric 1, navy background: 3 yards · Fabric 2, assorted light prints: 2¼ yards total · Border 1, navy: ⅝ yard · Border 2, pale ice blue: ⅓ yard · Binding: ⅝ yard · Backing: 4¼ yards · Batting: 76″ × 76″.

Techniques used: Rotary cutting squares and rectangles, stitch-and-flip corners sewn on a marked diagonal, straight ¼″ seams, sashing, borders, quilting and binding. No templates, no Y-seams and no paper piecing.
