🧵 Simple Shapes, One Step at a Time

The design uses straight seams, squares and rectangles, with a strip-pieced 4 × 4 checkerboard at its centre. There are no curved seams, triangles or appliqué shapes in the block construction.

A lovely project for practising patchwork fundamentals. Familiarity with accurate cutting, a scant ¼-inch seam and careful pressing is recommended. Beginners may prefer starting with the larger size, as the smaller version has finer pieces.

📐 Choose Your Block Size

  • Large: 9½ × 9½ inches unfinished; 9 × 9 inches finished when joined.
  • Small: 5 × 5 inches unfinished; 4½ × 4½ inches finished when joined.

The instructions end with the pieced block. Complete quilt layouts, cushions, wall hangings, backing, batting, quilting and binding instructions are not included. Any larger project needs a separate layout and finishing plan.

✂️ Before You Begin

Gather quilting cotton, coordinating thread, a sewing machine, an iron, and your preferred accurate fabric-cutting tools. Use the cutting tables to plan your fabric pieces.

The PDF uses US Letter pages and measurement-based cutting. The diagrams are assembly guides, not full-size cutting templates.

Styled images show fabric and colour inspiration. Botanical motifs and gold stars are fabric-print details, not included embroidery or appliqué designs. Exact fabrics, finished blocks, tools and decorative props are not included; your result will reflect the fabrics you choose.
