Turn a stack of 10-inch squares into a snowy winter throw. Cardinal Snowfall cuts each square into two strips, sews them back together, cuts them again and tosses the pieces into scrappy units. Four units make each block, and nine blocks are framed with light sashing, little red corner stones and a wide border. Every seam is straight, with no triangles or star points. Make it in snowy blues, greys and cardinal red like the colorway shown, or in any prints you love.

A Snowy Home for Your 10-Inch Squares
For the look shown, mix prints with small red cardinals on white and pale blue, snowflakes on slate blue, birch bark, grey gingham, pinecones and a few solid cardinal reds. Frame the blocks with snow-white sashing and red corner stones, then finish with a slate blue cardinal border and charcoal binding. Mixing lights and darks is what makes the tossed pieces stand out.
The product images show a fabric-colorway and styling idea. Construction diagrams in the PDF use simple sample colors, and the step-by-step photos show the technique in other prints. Fabrics are not supplied; choose your own squares and yardage to create your version.
Project Details
Finished size: 69β³ Γ 69β³ throw. Blocks measure 18 1/2β³ unfinished (18β³ finished), set 3 across and 3 down.
Fabric requirements: 1 pack of 10β³ squares (36 squares are used), 3/4 yard light fabric for the sashing, 1 1/4 yards border fabric, 2/3 yard for the corner stones and binding, 4 1/2 yards backing and a 77β³ Γ 77β³ piece of batting.
Techniques used: Rotary cutting, strip sets, sewing straight 1/4β³ seams, pressing, sashing with corner stones, borders and binding. The pattern assumes basic quilting skills.
Format: Digital PDF in English. Read it on screen or print it on US Letter or A4 paper. This is a rotary-cut piecing pattern; it does not include templates.
