1. Always Pre-Wash Your Fabric
Fabric can shrink and colors can bleed when washed. Pre-washing your fabric before cutting prevents your finished quilt from distorting the first time it goes through the laundry. Press it smooth with an iron before cutting.
2. Use a Rotary Cutter and Cutting Mat
Scissors are fine for small cuts, but a rotary cutter with a self-healing cutting mat gives you far more accuracy. Pair it with an acrylic quilting ruler for perfectly straight edges every time.
3. Press, Do Not Iron
Ironing involves a back-and-forth motion that can stretch and distort fabric. Instead, press your seams by lifting and setting the iron straight down. Always press seams to one side or open, depending on your pattern instructions.
4. Use a Quarter-Inch Seam Allowance
Most quilt patterns are designed with a precise quarter-inch seam allowance. Even a slight variation accumulates over dozens of seams and can throw off your entire block. Use a quarter-inch presser foot or mark your sewing machine plate for accuracy.
5. Cut Slowly and Accurately
Speed cutting leads to inaccurate pieces. Take your time with every cut. The accuracy of your cutting determines the accuracy of your entire quilt. A few extra minutes at the cutting stage saves hours of frustration later.
6. Chain Piece to Save Time
Chain piecing means sewing pieces one after another without cutting the thread between them. This speeds up your work significantly and reduces thread waste. Simply feed pieces under the presser foot continuously, then clip the chains apart when done.
7. Keep Your Sewing Machine Maintained
Clean the lint from your bobbin area regularly and change your needle after every 8 hours of sewing. A fresh needle makes a surprising difference in the quality of your stitches.
8. Label Your Blocks as You Go
As your quilt grows, it becomes easy to mix up blocks. Pin small paper labels to each block as you complete them so you always know their correct position in the layout.
9. Take Breaks and Step Back
